THE PROCESS

Many of the range of human emotions find their way into this. Birth is challenging.

Marc-Richard Whale Chair showing the Design process.

Each project is unique. The single most challenging aspect is the idea,  Inspiration arrives on its own schedule at the most bizzare moments creating a flurry of sketches ..but not quite right is nothing at all. More often than not the solution arrives in a dream.

The creative mind is strange.

Having established the basic paramaters, such as the materials to be used and the practical considerations, like can it fit through the doorways, the process begins. Initially, drawings, crude models from card and glue and then finally working, scale maquettes. Often these are made of metal, when complex curves are involved you need to be certain its actually doable.

Finally, full scale mock ups are made with a person seated inside to check it's comfortable and it  works and so the metal is chosen, checked for imperfections and the basic cutting begins, This is a slow process of metal and carbboard, patience and cursing. Then it's welding, welding, welding and grinding and welding. The piece is coming to life and suddenly it's there. A fantastic moment.

There are imperfections, tiny but they are there, like a painter's brush or a sculptor's chisel. The pieces will be damaged over the years the metal will patinate, the leather will age, this is part of their being.

The upholstery, a magical part of the creation, it's clean it's nice, it doesn't involve masks and respirators,  gloves and noise and sparks, it's foam and leather and fabric and the radio on in the background, it's peaceful. Scissors and foam and sewing machines.

Leather is a wonderful choice it goes so well with unpainted metal but equally there are a myriad of incredible fabrics that can be imagined and commissioned..and finally should it be lacquered, or painted or wrapped or left bare?

Decisions. Again.

Finally, after a genuine labour of love it's done.

The work is signed and numbered and sent to begin life in  a new home.

We hope you love it. We do.
